Things to do in Richmond

Richmond grass field town

Richmond is one of the nicest parts of London and kind of feels like you aren’t in London due to its vast green areas and uniqueness. It is very much south-west London and is the last stop on the District (green) line. It has so much to offer anyone that visits.

Richmond has also had a huge boost in visibility and tourism in the last few years. This is thanks to the Amazon series ‘Ted Lasso’, about an American football coach coming to England to manage a soccer team called ‘AFC Richmond’.

Let’s now get to the list of things to do in Richmond:

Kew Gardens richmond

Spend time at Kew Gardens

Something that is weather dependent but if it’s a clear day (no rain), then Kew Gardens is a must.

This botanical haven is renowned for its historical significance, scientific importance, and stunning landscapes. Home to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (World Heritage Site) spans 300 acres along the banks of the River Thames. The gardens boast a vast collection of plants from around the world, showcased in glasshouses like the iconic Palm House and the Princess of Wales Conservatory.

You can explore diverse landscapes, from the serene Japanese Garden to the expansive Arboretum. Kew Gardens also houses the Marianne North Gallery, displaying the botanical artworks of the intrepid Victorian artist. Beyond its aesthetic allure, Kew is a hub for scientific research and conservation efforts, making it a harmonious blend of natural beauty and scholarly pursuits in the heart of Richmond.

Unfortunately it’s not free to enter, prices start from about £13.50 (off peak), but most of the time you’ll be looking at paying £21.50 – you can purchase your ticket here.

I would also recommend packing a picnic and mat, as you have vast areas of beauty to sit down and enjoy some food. If you take it leisurely and visit everything on offer along with a picnic I would say you can easily spend 4-6 hours here.

Ted Lasso Pub Richmond

Visit the ‘Ted Lasso’ pub

As mentioned Richmond is home to the filming of Ted Lasso and you can actually go and have a pint in the pub where a lot of scenes are filmed. When I’ve been in a few times, it is very busy and clearly a lot of these people are here because of the show.

The pub is called The Prince’s Head and is just a short walk from the station. You will see people getting pictures outside and it can be crowded inside. If it is you can get your pic for Insta and then to the right there is another pub called The Cricketers which is normally not as busy.

But if you really want a drink in the famous pub then go in and do your thing, even if it’s standing room only.

Raitakrai Thai Richmond

Grab a bite to eat

Surely at some point you will be hungry from exploring Richmond. I have 2 recommendations for you:

Raitakraithai restaurant Richmond

This place has really good authentic Thai food and is very reasonably priced as well. Very handy if you are looking for an evening meal after visiting Kew Gardens, as it is located just a 5-10 min walk away if you head towards Richmond station. You can check out their menu and make a reservation here. Also the interior is very trendy and great for people wanting a cool Instagram photo.

The Ivy Richmond

I know this sounds expensive but again it’s very reasonably priced. Located just the other side of the centre, this is a great spot for brunch. The place itself feels very much like fine dining without the prices and has a great buzz about the place. If going on a weekend probably best to make a reservation in advance.

Richmond Park deer

Visit Richmond Park

Richmond Park, spanning over 2,500 acres, stands as a verdant oasis in southwest London and is a true gem among the city’s royal parks. Established by Charles I in the 17th century, this expansive park is not only the largest of London’s eight royal parks but also a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.

Home to a thriving population of deer, the park’s undulating landscapes, tranquil ponds, and ancient oak trees create a picturesque setting for cycling, walking, and horse riding.

Its iconic Pembroke Lodge offers stunning views of the Thames Valley, while the Isabella Plantation showcases a colourful array of azaleas and rhododendrons.

I’ve been here many times and one of my favourite times of year to go is winter when it’s a cold crisp morning and the sun is out. Normally with a group of friends to catch up and grab a warm drink from the cafe to walk with.

Twickenham stadium inside

Visit Twickenham stadium

OK so this is a little bit of a cheat as it’s not Richmond but it’s so close that it’s worth a mention and something you can do with it being a 10 mins bus ride away. This is the home of English Rugby, in which it has been there since 1909 (with improvements over time). The stadium holds 82,000 people and throws some great events from international games to things like the Rugby 7’s.

If you are lucky enough to be able to secure a ticket to a game or day event then I would say go, it’s a unique experience. If you are going mid week then maybe a stadium tour is on the agenda. You can book the tour here – this is part of the Go City Pass, so you could get this along with Kew Gardens and another choice to make a saving if you plan to do other things in London.

Visit Richmond Market

situated in the heart of Richmond’s Old Town, is a vibrant and eclectic hub that brings together a delightful mix of local produce, artisanal crafts, and diverse culinary offerings. Held regularly, the market showcases the best of the region’s fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers, along with a tempting array of gourmet treats.

See a show at Richmond Theatre

Richmond Theatre, a historic gem nestled in the heart of Richmond, London, is a cultural cornerstone with a legacy dating back to its opening in 1899. Designed by the renowned architect Frank Matcham, the theatre boasts an elegant Edwardian façade and an interior that exudes timeless charm.
