Best places to visit in Northern Thailand

Northern Thailand is a region known for its rich cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and unique traditions. It also borders the countries of Myanmar and Laos. Below is a list of places that you should look to visit if you find yourself in this part of Thailand.

Chiang Mai

Known as the “Rose of the North,” Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of Northern Thailand and is visited by millions of Thai and foreigners each year. They are famous for producing coffee and have a lot of unique cafes and has started a trend of people doing cafe hopping. You can also do a local homestay in the mountains which is a great experience to live like a local. 

Pai

A small town nestled in the mountains of Northern Thailand and sits on the banks of the Pai river, Pai is known for its laid-back atmosphere, beautiful waterfalls, and hot springs. In the evening there is a street market which offers great traditional Thai food along with Western cuisine and all at great prices.

Chiang Rai

Located in the Golden Triangle region of Northern Thailand, Chiang Rai is a city steeped in history and culture. Highlights include the Wat Phra Kaew Temple, the Black House, and the Golden Triangle viewpoint. There is also a waterfall called Pong Phra Bat you can visit along with a cruise you can take on the Kok river.

Doi Inthanon National Park

Known for its stunning waterfalls, hiking trails, and beautiful mountain vistas. You should visit Doi Inthanon National Park which can be easily accessed from Chang Mai

Mae Hong Son

A sleepy town located next to the Myanmar border, Mae Hong Son is known for its stunning scenery, it has a sparse population and is home to some hill tribes known as the Shan & Hmong. 

Lampang

Also known Nakhon Lampang, with its charming old town, ancient temples, and traditional horse-drawn carriages. Lampang is a great place to experience Northern Thailand’s rich cultural heritage.

Mae Sai

Located at the northernmost point of Thailand, Mae Sai is a bustling border town that’s famous for its markets and traditional handicrafts.
