Things to do in Richmond Yorkshire

Richmond, North Yorkshire, England

First let’s make sure you are looking at the right Richmond, this would be the one in Yorkshire not the one in London where the cult followed Ted Lasso is filmed.

Richmond Yorkshire is sandwiched between the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, the closest town is Darlington.

Richmond has a long history, being founded by Alan Rufus in 1071, a relative of William the Conqueror nonetheless. The town flourished as Market town during the medieval period. It now draws visitors because of its rich history with Richmond Castle being a centre piece to its heritage and charm.

Richmond Castle North Yorkshire

1. Visit Richmond Castle

Well we couldn’t really not start here, as it is a very impressive and significant part of Richmond’s history. The Castle was built by Alan Rufus atop a hill overlooking the River Swale. From here you can see panoramic views of the River and the countryside including the Yorkshire Dales.

You can also marvel at the amazing architecture and how well preserved the Castle is (considering its age). This is thanks to English Heritage who are the charity that manages this and many other historical sites in England.

If you want to book in advance you can on the English Heritage website and this will save you 15%. You can also check opening times here, also if there is anything happening that will restrict access to the whole castle or even why it’s closed (i.e. for maintenance).

There are many different prices depending on if you are going with family, also if you want to include a donation. The cheapest ticket for an adult starts at £6.80 (about $9) when this post was published.

2. Walking and Hiking in and around Richmond

If you enjoy amazingly picturesque countryside, then you should certainly go on a hike in this area.

There are many different trails to take and really depends on how long you want to walk for or have time to spare.

A really good website to check out the best rated trails and different options is all trails, also gives you the distance and time it takes.

3. Pub Crawl

You always need a back up, as who knows what can happen with the Great British weather. Depending on the time of year you visit there could be a very high chance of rain. I would say either hold up in a pub while the rain clears or even consider doing a mini pub crawl (bring your umbrella).

The pubs to check out in Richmond would be ‘Golden Lion’ which is rated the top pub on Google currently for within Richmond. You could also look at adding to the pub crawl The Castle Tavern and also Black Lion Hotel.

4. Take some pictures at Richmond Falls

Just a short stroll from the town centre along the River Swale you can visit the Richmond Falls. Here you’ll see numerous waterfalls surrounded by trees and countryside which is something very relaxing and a great place to get some truly British pictures.

5. Visit Richmond Markets

Ok, so you have two markets you can go to, either one indoor or outdoor. The outdoor one is operating Saturdays and Wednesdays in Richmond Market Place. The indoor Market, held in Market Hall daily.

You can browse the different stalls to see what is on offer, from local produce to arts and crafts and even souvenirs.

6. Visit Richmondshire Museum

If you like museums and to learn about history then this is one for you to check out. The museum covers exhibits from Victorian life to archaeology.

If you want to check out the museum from the comfort of your own home, then you can. You can take their vertical tour online.

7. Walk round Richmond Town Centre

Such an idyllic Market town, why not enjoy a stroll around at a leisurely pace and enjoy the olde worldie streets. You’ll find many independent shops, cafes and restaurants. A cafe worth checking out is ‘Granny’s Kitchen’ where you can go for Breakfast, afternoon tea and anything in between.

8. Watch a game at Richmondshire Cricket Club

Now this is going to be only doable in the summer months and on weekends most likely. The cricket club is a community hub and says it has the best beer garden in Richmond.

I really can’t think of anything better than watching some cricket in the sun with a pint in hand.

9. Visit the Green Howards Museum

Learn about one of Britain’s most famous infantry regiments at The Green Howards Museum. The museum showcases uniforms, weapons, and personal mementos from throughout the regiment’s history.
