What to do for a birthday in Lisbon

Lisbon Portugal tram

A great European city to spend a birthday and the capital of Portugal. I always feel like Lisbon is a very reasonably priced city compared to a lot of others, very relaxed but has a certain charm about it. In this list, we are going to give you some ideas of what you could get up to for a birthday in Lisbon.

1. Breakfast at Pastéis de Belém

Spending your birthday at Pastéis de Belém is a truly special way to start your day in Lisbon. As you step into the historic bakery, you’re immediately enveloped by the rich smells of freshly baked pastries.

Established in 1837, Pastéis de Belém is widely known for its iconic pastel de nata, a creamy custard tart encased in a crisp, flaky pastry shell. The interior of the bakery is charming, with traditional blue and white azulejos (tiles) adorning the walls, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere.

Sitting down at one of the quaint tables, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast that includes not just the famous tarts but also other traditional Portuguese treats, such as queijadas (cheese tarts) and bolo de arroz (rice cake).

The experience of enjoying these delicacies is heightened by the bakery’s storied history. You can savour your breakfast with a cup of rich Portuguese coffee or a refreshing galão (a milky coffee similar to a latte), all while soaking in the atmosphere filled with locals and tourists alike.

2. Go to a Sporting Lisbon football match

Attending a Sporting Lisbon game on your birthday is a pretty cool way to spend your birthday. You can throw yourself into local culture and experience the passionate world of Portuguese football.

As you arrive at the Estádio José Alvalade, the home stadium of Sporting CP, fans, adorned in the green and white colours of the team, fill the air with chants and songs. The stadium has impressive architecture and state-of-the-art facilities.

The thrill of the game itself is unforgettable. Sporting CP, one of Portugal’s most successful football clubs, plays with a high level of skill and tenacity. The camaraderie among the fans is evident, and the sense of unity and pride in their team is inspiring. Whether Sporting scores a stunning goal or makes a crucial defensive tackle the collective joy and excitement of the supporters create a memorable and dynamic birthday experience.

Certainly if you are a football fan then this is a must for your birthday. Obviously it needs to be in season and Sporting playing at home. You can check tickets here and would advise booking in advance where you can.

3. Visit a few Rooftop Bars

Lisbon has some of the most stunning rooftop bars in Europe, each offering spectacular views of this great city, making them perfect spots to celebrate a special occasion like a birthday. One of the top choices is Park Bar, located atop a multi-story car park in the Bairro Alto district.

Park Bar is known for its relaxed, garden-like setting complete with potted plants and wooden furniture, creating a cosy, laid-back vibes. The panoramic views of Lisbon’s rooftops and the Tagus River, especially during sunset, are truly a great sight to see. As the sun dips below the horizon, the atmosphere transforms, with soft lighting and music creating a dark backdrop to the rooftop and a chance to enjoy more cocktails and food.

Another must-visit rooftop bar is the Sky Bar at the Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Hotel. This chic and sophisticated venue offers a more upscale experience with its trendy design and stylish decor. Perched high above Lisbon’s bustling Avenida da Liberdade, Sky Bar provides breathtaking views of the city skyline and the river.

It’s an ideal spot if you are looking to enjoy expertly crafted cocktails and gourmet snacks in a refined setting. The cool atmosphere is enhanced by live DJ performances, making it a lively spot of an evening.

4. Lunch at a Scenic Restaurant in the city

Having lunch at a scenic restaurant in Lisbon is a great way to savour both the flavours and the sights of the city. Imagine dining at Ponto Final, a charming eatery located across the Tagus River in Cacilhas. To get there, you take a short ferry ride from Cais do Sodré, which itself offers stunning views of Lisbon’s waterfront.

Upon arrival, Ponto Final’s picturesque setting immediately captivates you. The restaurant is perched right on the edge of the river, with outdoor seating that allows you to enjoy your meal while gazing at the sprawling cityscape of Lisbon across the water. It’s a pretty simple restaurant but the location and surroundings can’t get much better for you to enjoy your special day.

There are other options but because of the ferry over and then the surroundings, local cuisine, I think this makes for a great half day. Make sure to get a nice bottle of local wine.

Entering the aquarium, you are immediately struck by the central tank, which holds an impressive array of sea creatures, including sharks, rays, and vibrant schools of fish. This enormous tank, visible from various angles and levels, creates the illusion of being submerged in the ocean itself.

The exhibits are thoughtfully designed to engage people of all ages, with interactive displays and detailed information about the species and their habitats. You can watch the playful sea otters, watch the graceful movements of jellyfish, and be enchanted by the colourful coral reefs.
